App in the store

The windows 8 app is now in the store, just search for Omega Ra and you will find it. Took a few minor tweaks, but it is passed cert and ready to go. I hope you all enjoy.

Windows 8 app

My Windows 8/RT app is taking a little bit longer than I expected. Weird little issues are cropping up during certification. So hopefully it will go through this time, but we’ll see. Again, it is nothing special, just an app so you can follow my blog, but it does have a live tile and is easy to navigate. So I will post again when it definitely hits the store. Until then Adios.

Finally updated my App

So with a little help I finally got my Windows Phone app updated and the issue with the light theme fixed. Though now the ads don’t work…it never ends, but that is a trivial thing. For an added bonus I am working on a Windows 8 app as well that will allow you to follow my blog on a PC as well. Whereas these are not exciting apps, they are a starting point at least. I still have a great idea for a game, but just don’t have the time to learn how to code it as I am busy with studying for certification test for work. But hopefully I can get it out there at some point. Either way enjoy the apps and I will try to blog more often to make them of some use ;)

EDIT: apparently there is still a minor issue with the initial listbox not updating properly. I do not see the new post there, but if I click on a category it is there…another bug to look at.

Basic Computer Security

This is a blog post I made on my other site http://www.metuchenit.com and thought I would put it here. I know I had this before, but I had to rebuild me site

From turning on a firewall to having a strong password there are a few simple things anyone can do to make their computer more secure. First let’s talk about passwords.

Everyone knows that they need a password to protect their login, but what most people consider a good password is anything but. If you are using a common word or string of numbers, that is not good at all. Most people want to make the password easy to remember, so they make it their kids name or a birthday. These are the worst type of password as they have a direct connection to you and can easily be figured out. What you want to do is make the password as random as possible. It should be at least 8 characters long and have a mix of lowercase, uppercase, numbers and special characters. But remember 8 should be the minimum, the longer the better. One thing you can do is replace letters with numbers, so the password can look sort of like a word, or purposely misspell words, for example; 3x@mP73z, that could be read as Examples. The 3 is a backward E the @ is an a, and use a z instead of an s at the end. This makes it a little easier to remember for the individual who’s password it is, but harder to crack as it has a nice mix of characters. Another thing to consider is to make it a string of words instead of just a single word. So for examples you could make “Thisisanexample” ThI5iS@n3XaMPl3. By making it multiple words strung together is makes it harder for a program to figure it out by just using every word in the dictionary. This is only one example of course, feel free to get creative, but remember try to keep it unrelated to you and as random as possible, the weirder it looks the harder it is to crack.

One of the next important things to securing your computer is Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware. There are many different programs out there that you can choose, and most cost money. But why pay for something that you can get for free. I always install two programs that take care of all my needs as far as Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware. My anti-virus program of choice is Microsoft Security Essentials a free program from Microsoft that is a small quick install, doesn’t use a lot of system resources and is very effective, plus it gets updated automatically through Windows Update, which is built into Windows. As for Anti-Malware, I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, again a fast small software that is free that can find things that no other software seems to find. I love this program and use it on every computer I have, there is even a paid version that has some upgrades that some people may want, but the free scanner works amazingly well on its own.

There are two more things I want to talk about briefly, your firewall and wireless network security. These are to very simple things to implement and both have a big impact on security. Turning on the firewall that is built into windows is a simple matter of going to Start>Control Panel>Windows Firewall and clicking on. A firewall monitors the incoming and outgoing traffic through the network and determines if it should be there, so it can find malicious programs trying to send out your keystrokes (which include passwords) to a nefarious person. So obviously you want this option turned on. And for router security, when you set the router up it probably turned it on for you, but if not, log into the router and look for wireless security settings. Turn on WPA2 with TKIP/AES encryption. That is the strongest wireless security there is currently and make sure you make a strong password for your network. This will prevent anyone within wireless range from connecting to your network and either snooping around in your files or just using your bandwidth and slowing your connection down.

Doing these basic steps will put you a long way toward having a more secure pc and home network, will it make it 100% secure? No. There is no such thing as a 100% secure network, but this will make it hard enough for a person to get through that they are unlikely to bother trying. Plus it will help keep viruses out of your system and make things run smoothly as well.

Redesigning the Windows Logo

It looks like all those people were right about the logo redesign after all. Though I am not sure why it was needed it appears Microsoft is actually redesigning the Windows logo to be more inline with the new Metro style they are going for with Windows 8. It seems a little on the bland side, but who knows, maybe others will like it. What do you guys think?

Connected Home: Part 1 Introductions.

In our homes these days there are more and more devices that can connect to the internet. Where most of us simply have a wireless router to give this connection to our devices, it can be more beneficial (albeit more expensive) to run physical wires throughout your home. This can make for faster data transfer within the home network, and with the inclusion of a home server, you can have you own personal cloud for music and other media storage, plus back up of all your connected PC’s for fast disaster recovery.

I am going to be setting up my home with this kind of network and will take you all along as I assemble my network step-by-step. I will detail the routers and other hardware I use and explain why I decided to do it in this fashion. Hopefully you all find this information helpful and possibly might want to set up a home network in a similar manner.

Before taking on a project like this you need to assess what kind of equipment you need and whether running Ethernet Cable throughout the house is even possible to do on your own. If you have a basement like me and most of your computers and various internet enabled hardware are on the first floor, then this doesn’t pose too big of a problem, but if you don’t have a basement, then running the cabling through the walls and attic could be problematic. So it is best to make an assessment, because if you want Ethernet you may need professional help running it.

The Details: Equipment

The things I will be adding to my network are as follows:

Initial Steps:

The hardest part of this entire install is running the cable and attaching the connectors. Once you have accessed that you are going to do this yourself, having the proper tools is important. Get yourself the needed tools to make the connections, they are available all over including Home Depot. If you are not running new coaxial like I did then all you will need is the Ethernet cable, connectors and a crimper, and if you choose to do a clean install the wall jacks and a punch down tool. These can be bought online or at Home depot. One such online retailer is Microbarn. I recommend the keystone wall jacks and plates, plus they have the cable and tools you need.

When running the cable it is a good practice to label the wires at the switch so you know where they go (i.e. living room, den, etc.) so if a problem arises you can easily find which port you are on to make sure connections and cable are tight and not frayed or cracked. Plus keeping the cables together and nicely and neatly run will make trouble shooting simpler as well, plus keep the area of the router/switch less chaotic.

When wiring up your connectors for the Ethernet cable you have to be sure all the colors are in the correct order. The order that is most commonly used is 568-B: White/Orange, Orange, White/Green, Blue, White/Blue, Green, White/Brown, Brown. (fig 1) Doing this on both ends of the cable make a straight-through or patch cable, which is what you will be using mostly, as the a lot of switches these days have auto-sensing ports, which means the need for cross-over cables is lessened. Though in some instances (usually connecting your cable modem to the router) you do need a cross-over cable. To make one of those you do one end of the cable with the 568-B, and the other with 568-A (fig 2), this is accomplished by switching the Orange and Green wire sets. So the 568-A would be white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown, brown. Though as I said it is unlikely that you will need to make a cross-over cable, as when you get a modem they usually supply the needed cable.

These are the initial steps you should take to get things going, next time I will get into hooking up the switch and router and how to configure your wireless security. Until then I hope this was helpful.

See you next time.

Great Game Idea…but where to start..

Hello all out there in the ether. I have a great idea for a game for the Windows Phone platform. Though I am loathe to put too much detail out there for fear someone with more coding and game building knowledge will take it and run with the idea. I have next to no programming knowledge, so I am not sure how to begin. I have drawn up some sketches of the general screen UI and an overall world map. But how I go about turning those into 3D awesomeness escapes me. I know I would need all sorts of 3D models and landscapes to pull this off and obviously would have to get animations and such as well. I have looked at the apphub and even downloaded a couple bits of code from the free resources that are available, but how do I string them together? If anyone out there can help me get going to point me in the right direction that would be awesome, as I am sure that if I can get this game together, people will love it and MAYBE I can try to get it the coveted Xbox LIVE and put in some fun achievements. Well, that is all for now. Feel free to drop me a line or just say hey on Twitter.

See you around,

Samsung Focus and me :-)

So, I caved and decided to switch to At&t to get the Samsung Focus. I have had it since Sunday and must say that I am loving it every bit as much as I thought I would.

This phone is a work of art. That being said, I wanted the NoDo update. So I went to the trusty XDA site and found the now well known method using a VPN yo Hungary. All went smoothly and I am now enjoying my Focus with improved market search and faster loading. Copy and paste is a non-issue for me, but I am glad it is there all the same.

I have also installed a 32GB SD card into the phone to see how all things SD card related are going. The initial install of the card was fine, I just had to do the “three fingered salute” format for it to be recognized. I know that for the lost part issues don’t arise until there is a large amount of info on the card. So in that vein I went to sync 20GB of music to my phone last night and left it until this morning. Here is where the issues pop up. When I awoke this morning I find an error code up on the screen. C000D124D to be precise. Only about 4GB synced to my phone, and now with it plugged in via USB I can’t seem to sync at all, I just get this error. Looking it up online mentions reinstalling Zune, so I tried that yo no avail. Unfortunately, I then had to head out the door to work (where I am writing this) and was not able to further troubleshoot. I am however able to manually drag and drop music to the phone while plugged in. So it is only a syncing issue while wired up, from what I understand (though I haven’t tested it yet) the wireless sync option still works.

On XDA there are a few other members reporting similar results with the Focus + SD card, so those who are considering this option (SD card that is) you might want to take this into account before buying the card.

Other than this foible, I am truly enjoying my Samsung Focus immensely and am having a great time playing a few choice games and showing it off to family and friends. I will continue posting with my thoughts as things develop and more updates and info become available. Perhaps I will even rate a few games and/or apps, we’ll see. Until then, good day my friends and have a great time.

Decisions, decisions…

A Verizon customer and Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7, the new OS on the block. There have been many reviews for this new opus from Microsoft, so I will not go into a review such as that. Merely I will speak of the overall frustration that I and other CDMA (especially Verizon) customers are feeling at being thus far left out of the new fun.

I know that I am truly frustrated as I have been following this OS since it’s announcement last February, and have been waiting with baited breathe for it to be released. When November came and it was released to the US public, I was excited, though by this point I knew that it was not to be available on the Verizon network. But I couldn’t imagine that it would be very long until it was released, being that Verizon is one of, if not the, largest carriers in the US. Sadly, I was mistaken.

It is now 4 months since the release of WP7 here in the US and only today have we heard anything about CDMA phones. Sprint is announcing the Arrive (7 pro formerly) but there is still no word from Verizon. So my question, and I am sure many others as well, is…do I stay or do I go? I am considering switching to AT&T because Verizon clearly seems to be dragging their feet when it comes to windows phone. Now that the first update is around the corner and the bigger mango update is due later this year, I would like to be in the mix so to speak when these updates come around.

Whatever my decision ends up being, I will be giving updates as to how things progress once I do get my phone. So if you are interested on one person’s observations and ruminations on Windows Phone and all of it’s glory or folly. Feel free to subscribe.

EDIT:

Decision is made, for better or worse. I have decided to wait on Verizon since there has been some rumor about it coming out by the end of March. If the ETF wasn’t so high I would be an AT&T customer however.

The Holidays have arrived.

December 24th Christmas Eve and also a dear friends Birthday. The Shopping is done, the presents are wrapped, it is all down to having a lovely dinner and making sure the birthday goes well.

The holidays are a rough time, always feeling like there is something else that needs to be done, something else that needs to be bought, wrapped, or handled in some way. We feel like we never get a break and it can be very stressful. But when things like this happen we have to remember that it isn’t really all about the presents, it is about being with those we love and enjoying the time together, reminiscing and just enjoying each others company.

So when the world and the season start to get you down, just stop and take a deep breath and remember all is well and that it isn’t the end of the world if the gifts don’t get wrapped, or even bought. The world will continue to revolve.

Happy Holidays to all and Have a safe and prosperous New Year.
